Are there challenges in registering an overseas marriage in the U.S.?

If getting married overseas, could there be any challenges when registering the marriage in the US?

If you get married overseas, and you went through the process that that country or that state requires, you're going to be married all over the world. Your marriage will be recognized here in America as well.

So if you get married in Egypt, you don't have to necessarily come to America and register your marriage here. If you live in Illinois, let's say for example, after your marriage, you were married in Egypt, you would basically say that you were married in Egypt. You've been a resident of Illinois for the last 90 days and I want a divorce.

So the place of divorce doesn't mean that's the place where you got married. The place of divorce is usually where you've lived for the last 90 days or six months before you get divorced. So there's not really any challenges. And the other thing too is that if you get married overseas, a lot of times there's immigration involved and so one party is sponsoring the other party for immigration benefits.

And so that also is going to be evidence that you are married.
